Contains detailed nest box (or shelf, basket, platform) plans for many varieties of birds. More than I have seen in one place before.There is a chapter dedicated to birds that use boxes, and one to birds that don't, with a subsection for each species. Most subsections have plans for a nesting site for that particular species, but a few tell you how to modify some other bird's plans. For example, the section for tufted titmice tells you to use a bluebird house, but with a different sized entrance hole and mounted in a forest location.This book uses the currently popular layout style; lots of pictures, text boxes, interesting information, notes, warnings, tips, etc, etc, etc. Unfortunately, this means the information I got this book for, bird houses, is buried in an avalanche of eye candy and semi related information. Important details are sometimes hidden within that other information, so I can't just turn to the plan pages to build a house. There are also a few important items hidden in scattered text boxes, and never referred to in the plans themselves. For example, dealing with nest box overheating is addressed in the oddly titled text box "Nest box innovations old and new", which falls between titmice and owls. All this forces you to read through several sections, if not the entire book, every time you want to build any of the plans.Bottom line, while this book is filled with many great birdhouse plans, it ends up time consuming and frustrating to actually use. It seems better suited as a coffee table book than a how-to one.
