I can honestly say that I've never read a book like this before. Akhtar not only makes an iron-clad argument for why we need to treat animals better (for them and us), but it's all the surprising elements in here that made it a fast-paced, entertaining read unlike any other non-fiction I've read before. The book includes an unexpected and colorful cast of characters that Akhtar met with and interviewed (a mobster, serial killer and hippy, among others) but somehow they feel like a community. The stories in this book prove our commonality--that animals bring us all together. There are parts on animal abuse that are hard to read, but there's a good dose of humor and some "did I really just read that?" shocking moments that'll have you turning the pages to see what's next.Akhtar has a lyrical writing style that's a pleasure to read and feels down-to-earth. Like it's a conversation over coffee (though most friends can't talk about the time they met a serial killer in prison or drove around with the NYPD). You'll finish the book feeling informed and uplifted about our relationship with animals.
